Snow and glacier melt in the The Hindu-Kush-Himalayas contribute to food production in some of the most densely populated river basins in the world. Using detailed maps of cropped areas, updated with the latest statistics on harvested area and food production by the UN's Food and agriculture Organization, Uncharted Waters Research calculated the percentage contribution to global food production for the major food crops in 9 major river basins that originate in these mountain ranges. More than a third of the world's rice production, most heavily irrigated, is grown in these river basins. Our analysis contributes to the 'Roof of the World' topic in National Geographic.
